Kuk

The door to my office swung open and I looked up, vaguely annoyed to discover that it was my sister walking into my office and not Anise, even though I knew it wasn't possible for her to. She had work and didn't actually know where my office was. Two things that would make it hard for her to visit me here.

"What can I do for you, Kua?" I asked.

"Is that any way to greet me, brother?" She dropped down into the visitor's chair on the other side of my desk and threw her legs over the arm without a single care for how she should be properly sitting on it.

I rolled my eyes. "You never come here unless you want something."

"Maybe I was just passing and wanted a chat."

"Mmhmm." I set down my pen and studied her intently. "Guy problems?"

"Pfft, please. You know I don't have those."

"If you're still dating that warlock, then we know you have them." I took a sip of water, but mostly to stop myself from berating her over her choice again. I knew there was nothing I could say that would change her mind about the man, even if I thought it was going to end in disaster.

"We're not dating, Kuk. Don't be so old-fashioned. You can sleep with someone without being in love with them, you know."

I choked on the water.

Kua raised an eyebrow, a knowing smile spreading over her face. "You slept with someone."

Memories of the night before assailed me. Not that the thought of Anise falling apart in my arms was something that was ever really far from my thoughts today.

"Ah, but you love them already." The way she said it made it sound as if she was disappointed in me.

"I don't." Yet.

"But it wasn't just a one-night stand, was it?"

"No." At least, I certainly hoped it wasn't. My gut told me that I was right about that.

"Oh, Kuk, what am I going to do with you?"

"Just tell me why you're here, Kua." I tried to keep the exasperation out of my voice, but I didn't think I managed very well.

She sighed. "Fine. Did you hear from Horus recently?"

"About the calendar he's having Baal shoot for him?"

"Ah, so you did."

"It would be hard to forget an invitation to take part in a naked calendar of gods," I pointed out.

"Are you doing it?"

"No." I couldn't think of anything worse, though I was confident that between Horus and Baal, they'd be able to find more than enough people willing to take part in their project.

"Aww, don't be a spoilsport. Don't you want to help the kids? Or the cats. Or whatever it is the charity supports."

"It's for Horus' animal sanctuary." Which she would know if she'd read the email properly.

"Ah." She shrugged. "It sounds fun. I'm doing it."

"Of course you are." I shook my head in bemusement.

"You should try getting out of your shell a bit more, you might like it there," she said.

"I'm a few thousand years old, I'm not about to change everything about myself now.
